History of Grama Panchayat

Karimkunnam Grama Panchayat is a village panchayat situated in Thodupuzha Taluk of Idukki District, under the jurisdiction of the Thodupuzha Block Panchayat, and includes Karimkunnam Village. The Panchayat has an area of 22.67 square kilometers. Its boundaries are Thodupuzha Municipality to the north, Kottayam District to the south, Muttom Grama Panchayat to the east, and Purapuzha Grama Panchayat to the west.

Located at the southern end of Thodupuzha Taluk in the western part of Idukki District, bordering Kottayam District, this Panchayat was once a habitat for wild animals. The Karimkunnam village of decades ago has now transformed into a developed town. Dense forest regions such as Illachari and Nellappara, which were once habitats for wild animals, are now populated settlement areas. Thick forests no longer exist in this Panchayat.

Generally, the soil found here is gravelly in nature. The Thodupuzha River flows along the eastern side of the Panchayat. Although there were extensive paddy fields in the low-lying areas in the past, their extent has been gradually decreasing.

Karimkunnam Panchayat is a land of cultural diversity. Hindus, Christians, and Muslims live together in this Panchayat with great harmony and cooperation, without any religious or caste discrimination. The people here actively support one another during religious ceremonies and social occasions.

The early farmers who struggled against hills, wild animals, and nature initially cultivated paddy and later began farming ginger, tapioca, turmeric, and tuber crops, along with long-term crops such as coconut and arecanut.

In 1947, with the objective of promoting the development of this region, the Travancore Registrar Assembly decided to form a Village Development Committee at Karimkunnam. Joseph Chazhikadan MLA was elected as the first President of the Karimkunnam Village Development Centre, along with six committee members.

Karimkunnam Panchayat is situated in the Thodupuzha Block of Thodupuzha Taluk in Idukki District. Formed in January 1949, the Panchayat has an area of 22.67 square kilometers. Its boundaries are Thodupuzha Municipality to the north, Kottayam District to the south, Muttom Grama Panchayat to the east, and Purapuzha Grama Panchayat to the west.

The Panchayat has a total population of 12,094, comprising 6,234 men and 5,860 women, with a literacy rate of 94%. The residents mainly depend on several public wells and public drinking water taps for clean water. Uravappara, Mattathippara, and Illichari are important tourist destinations in the Panchayat.

In the public distribution sector, ration shops and Maveli Stores are functioning in the Panchayat. Street lights have been installed in various parts of the Panchayat to make roads safer and more accessible during nighttime.

According to its geographical features, Karimkunnam Panchayat belongs to the midland region and is densely covered with small and large hills. Agriculture has traditionally been the main livelihood of the majority of the people in the Panchayat. Today, food crops such as tapioca, paddy, pineapple, and banana are cultivated, along with cash crops including rubber, coffee, pepper, cocoa, and arecanut.

This region consists of hills and rocky landscapes such as Illicharimala, Edapramkunnu, Mattattippara, Mattathippara, Maniyakkampara, Nellappara, Velimattampara, Pookkumbappara, and Uravappara. The Thodupuzha River flows through the Panchayat. The Malankara Canal, which is part of the Muvattupuzha Valley Irrigation Project, serves as an important irrigation source for the Panchayat. In addition, there are public ponds within the Panchayat. Proper maintenance and utilization of these water resources are essential for the sustainability and development of the agricultural sector.

Although there are no major large-scale industries in the Panchayat, small-scale industries such as hollow bricks and plywood manufacturing are functioning here. Since the area is also suitable for tourism, resort tourism is developing steadily. A petrol pump belonging to Hindustan Petroleum is located in the Panchayat. Being an agricultural region, the Panchayat has great potential for agro-based industries.

Karimkunnam Panchayat is progressing steadily in the field of education. In the private sector, there is one Higher Secondary School, one U.P. School, and two L.P. Schools functioning in the Panchayat. In the government sector, one L.P. School is situated at Karimkunnam. For animal husbandry services, a veterinary hospital functioning under the Department of Animal Husbandry is located in Karimkunnam.

Three cooperative banks are functioning in the cooperative sector: Idukki District Cooperative Bank, Karimkunnam Service Cooperative Bank, and South Malabar Gramin Bank, Karimkunnam. A branch of the nationalized State Bank of Travancore is also functioning in Karimkunnam. In addition, two private sector banks are presently operating in the Panchayat.

The Panchayat has one community hall and three private auditoriums. The offices of the Electricity Board and the Water Authority are situated in Thodupuzha. Madapparambil Resort is one of the major private establishments in the Panchayat. The Village Office, Krishi Bhavan, and Police Station are functioning in Karimkunnam. A telephone exchange is also operational here.

The Punalur–Muvattupuzha and Thodupuzha–Puliyanmala State Highways pass through the Panchayat. Though Panchayat roads provide transportation facilities, improved transport infrastructure is essential for the development projects of the Panchayat. Residents depend on Nedumbassery Airport, the nearest airport, for international travel. Kottayam Railway Station is the nearest railway station to the Panchayat. Cochin Port is the nearest port. Thodupuzha Bus Stand is the main center for road transport connectivity.

The major commercial centers of the Panchayat are Puthenpally Junction, Nellappara, and Karimkunnam. Numerous places of worship are situated in the Panchayat. Temples such as Moorippara Devi Temple, Shasthampara Ayyappa Temple, Karimpanakkavu Durga Devi Temple, Chakkulammala Devi Temple, and Bhajanamadam Subrahmanya Temple, along with Christian churches such as St. Joseph’s Church, St. Peter’s Church, Little Flower Church, and St. Augustine’s Church, as well as the Thaikkavu Muslim Mosque, are located across the Panchayat. Festivals and celebrations associated with these religious institutions reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Freedom fighters E.C. Ulahannan, Mullassery John, and Sankaran Kuttiyanikkal, along with lyricist Karimkunnam Chandran, are among the notable personalities from this land who are no longer with us. Karimkunnam Club and Ponnanthanam Library are important cultural institutions of the Panchayat.

Several healthcare institutions are actively functioning in the Panchayat. A Government Ayurveda Dispensary and a Government Homoeo Hospital are operating here. In addition, a sub-centre of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) is situated in Karimkunnam.

To address waste management issues in the Panchayat, the Haritha Karma Sena, a State Government initiative, is functioning actively. The Grama Panchayat also owns a vehicle for waste management activities. Furthermore, the Panchayat owns an ambulance for patient care services.
